What are Veneers?

Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry is dental work that is designed to enhance the appearance of teeth, gums and/or bite. This does not necessarily improve functionality of the teeth.

While cosmetic dentistry is not an area of specialty that is recognized by the American Dental Association, there are many dentists out there who do nothing but cosmetic dentistry, making them experts in the field of veneers, crowns and dental implants.

Veneers are very thin, porcelain laminates that are custom made and bonded to a particular tooth. Veneers help to close gaps between teeth, change color of teeth, and resurface teeth that have been damaged. Veneers can help if a tooth is cracked or broken and needs strengthening. Veneers can also be used if a tooth is worn down.

The benefits of dental implants are that they feel and look like natural teeth, integrate into the jaw structure so they fit your mouth appropriately and they help to prevent gum and bone loss from a missing tooth. Since bridges attach to the surrounding teeth, dental implants provide a great alternative because they do not rely for support on the surrounding teeth. While some implants may be done for cosmetic reasons only, often times they are helpful at preventing gum or bone loss when a tooth is missing.

A crown is needed when a tooth is weak, often from earlier cavities and resulting big fillings. Crowns are a great solution for a cracked or broken tooth. They also help reduce sensitivity if a large filling has been placed in a tooth. Crowns are also used to support a dental bridge if needed or cover misshapen teeth or teeth with discoloration that are not esthetically pleasing. Crowns now come in a variety of materials from metal to ceramic porcelain. Each has its use and function as is needed by the patient.

There are many reasons why a  person would need cosmetic dentistry. Some are purely cosmetic while others are for comfort or functionality.

To improve a smile’s appearance, veneers are a wonderful option, as they can conceal teeth that are stained, broken, misshapen or poorly aligned. Veneers can also be used to cover dark spaces between teeth.

Veneers are thin custom made coverings that cover the front and side surfaces of your teeth, much like an artificial fingernail. They are often made of porcelain which is held in place by a resin which adheres the back of the veneer to the prepared tooth. Although veneers are thin, they are extremely strong and durable. With veneers, major aesthetic changes can be achieved without the need to reduce the size of the tooth significantly, and the procedure can be completed with little or no discomfort.
